What is the Smart Export Guarantee?
The Smart Export Guarantee, or SEG, requires participating electricity suppliers to pay eligible small-scale generators for electricity exported to the grid. Solar PV is one of the eligible technologies. Payment is for metered export, which differs from the electricity generated or used in your home.
What evidence might a supplier require?
Ofgem’s generator guidance sets out certification and metering requirements. For relevant small installations, suppliers may require MCS certification or an equivalent standard. Check the evidence accepted by your chosen supplier before agreeing an installation, particularly if an installer proposes a different certification route.

How do you compare export tariffs?
Check the actual rate, whether it is fixed or variable, contract conditions and payment frequency. Some offers depend on buying import electricity from the same supplier or using specific equipment. Compare the overall cost of imported electricity as well as the export headline.
We do not publish a permanent best-tariff table because rates and eligibility change. Obtain current terms directly from each supplier when you are ready to apply.
How does a battery affect exports?
Storing surplus solar can reduce what is available to export and increase what you use later. That can be useful, but the comparison should include battery costs and losses. If a system also charges from the grid, ask the supplier how it treats subsequent battery exports.
What if the property already receives Feed-in Tariff payments?
Check the existing arrangement before making changes. Do not assume you can collect two export payments for the same electricity. Ask the current payment provider how an equipment change or move to a different export arrangement would affect your account.
Who opens the export account?
The installation handover should leave you with the documents needed for your chosen supplier. Confirm who assists with the application and what you must submit yourself. An installer introduction through Grays Solar does not automatically create an export account or guarantee acceptance.
