Is an older roof suitable for panels?
The age of a home is not a complete assessment of its roof. Coverings may have been replaced, structures altered and extensions added. Ask the installer what needs checking and whether a roofer or structural specialist should be involved before design work proceeds.
Should repairs happen before solar installation?
If repairs are already needed, discuss the sequence with the roofer and solar installer. Consider access, warranties and the cost of removing and reinstalling equipment later. A coordinated plan should state who is responsible for the roof covering and any penetrations.
How do chimneys and neighbouring buildings affect design?
Shade can change generation and the most useful panel arrangement. Ask for assumptions specific to the proposed roof surfaces. Do not accept a blanket claim that all terraces or all rear elevations in Grays face the same direction.
What electrical work might be needed?
Ask the installer to assess the existing supply, consumer unit, inverter position and cable route. The quote should identify included electrical work and explain how any unexpected findings will be priced and agreed.
What if the building is protected?
A listed building or conservation-area property needs careful checks against the relevant rules. A discreet or roof-integrated design does not itself establish permission. Resolve the position with the authority before work begins.
What documents should you keep?
Keep the survey findings, agreed layout, contract, electrical certificates and equipment warranty documents together. Ask who handles a leak or fault if there is a dispute about whether it relates to the roof or the solar work.
