What does a home battery do?
A home battery stores electricity and delivers it later. With solar, that often means storing daytime surplus for evening use. Some systems can also charge from the grid on a schedule. Storage shifts energy between times of day; it does not create extra generation.
We start the comparison with a simple question: when do you have surplus electricity, and when would you use the stored energy? That is more useful than choosing a battery because it is the largest available.
How are capacity and power different?
Capacity in kWh describes stored energy. Power in kW describes the rate of charging or discharging. Ask for usable capacity and continuous output, rather than relying on a model name. A battery may contain enough energy for the evening while still needing grid support for several high-power appliances at once.
How should you size a battery?
Give the installer consumption and generation data if you have it. Ask them to compare the proposed battery against a smaller option and a solar-only system. A battery that rarely fills or empties may not deliver enough extra benefit to justify its cost.

Does an overnight tariff improve the case?
Possibly. Compare the off-peak import cost with the electricity cost avoided later, allowing for losses. If you store solar, also account for export payments you give up. Tariffs can change, so ask for a second scenario with a smaller difference between peak and off-peak prices.
Can an existing solar system use a battery?
An installer needs to check the inverter and electrical arrangement. Ask whether an AC-coupled retrofit or a change to the inverter is proposed, and how that affects cost, monitoring, warranties and existing export payments. Provide the original installation paperwork where available.
Will it provide backup during a power cut?
Backup needs suitable equipment and a properly designed installation. Ask which circuits are supplied, how changeover works and the limits on power and runtime. Do not infer backup capability from the presence of a battery alone.
